Europan 10

competition entry Europan 10 - Munchen (DE)

with K.Huyghe, P.Decoster, A.Grandry, K.Rens, A. Schoofs

The competition asked for a proposal for a site in the historic centre of Munich, the site is dominated by a large entrance ramp to an underground car park and is therefore left unused...

The main elements of the proposal focus on the integration of the underground car park into the urban scheme.

The entrance to the underground car park occupies a significant part of the project area and therefore plays a key role in formulating an appropriate answer to the current problems. At this point, the ramp is perceived as a 'negative' element that prevents optimal use and future development of the area. Even after the postulated reduction from 6 to 4 access lanes, the entrance slope will still have a big impact on the site.

The proposal aims to revalue this negative but indispensable urban element into a contributing factor in the urban planning strategy. The chosen strategy tries to integrate the ramp of the car park in the new urban space instead of ignoring it, by building a complicated structure over it. The choice of designing the ramp as an open space also minimizes the impact of construction and nuisance for the underground functions that rely on it.

In order to reposition the ramp as a positive spatial element there are two important factors. The first one is the further reduction of the ramp's footprint by changing the start and endpoints of the slope. This returns an extra space of 500m2 on ground level, which is not influenced by traffic coming in- and out the car park. As a second part of the strategy the ramp is charged with different functions by implementing a new building and underground car park right next to it
